Because if you use the brakes to much, you will get low air pressure and your truck will not move, and because you will save your brakes from extra wear and tear.

Not sure how to explain this strange new behavior. I've been driving the new MAN TGX for 50+ hours and only just tonight noticed that it's slowing me down automatically when cruise control is on. I'll set cruise control to 50 km/h, speed up to 70, and about a second later it drastically brakes me down to 50 again. I don't have a retarder on this truck and the automatic retarder setting in

Jake or compression-release brakes are mostly used in American trucks and, while exhaust-restriction brakes are used in Euro trucks. Both are engine brakes, just different methods. The setting is called "Automatic retarder". When it is checked it will slow you down when on cruise control and going downhill for instance.

But I don't manage to see nor feel the effect of increasing engine brakes.
