Note that for weapons, there are some collections in PoF that rewards you with an ascended weapon. I wouldn't necessarily say they are fast, but I unlocked quite a bit of many of the collections just by playing the maps normally - then I look and see what I'm missing (usually a race or skritt chest with a specific class).

I found out that the normal way to get ascended gear is to level armorsmith and weaponsmith to 500 and craft them, creating account bounded gear.
Honestly, crafting them is pretty easy. Just look for the cheapest recipe stat combo you can on GW2efficiency and then stat change to your desired stats. Each piece should be under 30g I'd bet. If you're farming some of the top metas, you could very realistically get full ascended in a week or two play 1-2 hours per day.
